Barbara Ann Shover, 80, of Mechanicsburg (formerly of Wormleysburg) died Wednesday, December 20, 2017 following a lengthy illness in The Oaks at Bethany Village. Born in Williamsport, PA she was the daughter of the late Harry Clayton Searer and Florence Eleanor (Watson) Searer. Barbara was also predeceased by her Step-Father, Lawrence W. Peters and her brothers, Harry James Searer and Robert Marlin Searer. Mrs. Shover graduated from the former West Shore High School, Lemoyne, in the Class of 1955. She was a member of the Spanish Honor Society and lettered in basketball and softball. She married her high school sweetheart, The Rev. Dr. Donald R. Shover, Jr., and was blessed with 59 years of a happy life together. She also graduated from The Polyclinic Hospital School of Nursing in the class of 1958. Her professional career included specialties in Surgical, Pediatric, Oncology and I.V. Team nursing. She practiced in Huntingdon, PA, Dayton, Ohio, Baltimore, MD, Lock Haven, Williamsport and Harrisburg, PA. Following additional training in Pittsburgh, she became the first I.V. Staff nurse to insert PICC lines in Polyclinic Medial Center and trained several nurses who still perform this task in the UPMC Pinnacle Health System. Her ministry in local churches included teaching children’s Sunday School classes, special training in Small Group Ministry, directing children’s choir, singing in Chancel Choirs, playing in Handbell Choirs, United Methodist Women’s Mission projects, and serving on various committees. She enjoyed spending time at the beach, camping, visiting the family cabin in Tioga Co., and especially spending time with her seven grandchildren who she loved dearly. Barbara is survived by her husband, her three children, The Rev. Mark R. Shover and wife, Heidi of Waynesboro, PA, David C. Shover and wife, Carolyn of Camp Hill, PA, and Mrs. Dawn M. Shertzer and husband, Brian of Middletown, PA, and seven grandchildren: Jonathan, Lauren, Emily, Michaela, Taryn, Jeremy and Dakota. A memorial service will be held in her church, First United Methodist Church, 135 W. Simpson St., Mechanicsburg, PA on Wednesday, December 27, at 11:00 a.m. with a visitation with the family at 9:30 a.m. prior to the service.
