Betty "Janie" Jane Altland

February 25, 1934 - April 6, 2018

Betty Jane “Janie” Altland (Dersham), 84 a resident of Bethany Village Retirement Community in Mechanicsburg, Pa died April 6 at her home after a courageous ordeal with urachal cancer. She was born Feb. 25, 1934 in Duncannon, Pa, daughter of James and Helen Dersham. She is survived by her children: Sherry Nimtz and husband Eric of Duncannon; Andrew Rodemaker and wife Sharon of Dillsburg. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years Stanley K. Altland; her parents Helen Dersham (Hoover) and James O. Dersham; a step-daughter Ruth Ann LaPrarie; a daughter-in-law Brenda Altland and a brother James Dersham. Survivors also include: a brother Robert Dersham and wife Lisa of Trinity, Fl; a sister Lucy Fesler and husband Jeffrey of Macedonia, OH; a step-son Keith Altland and wife Loretta; four granddaughters; three grandsons; and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews. She graduated in 1952 from Duncannon High School and was active in numerous alumni activities. Janie retired as a licensed real estate appraiser practicing in Atlanta, Ga. Janie was an active member of the Camp Hill United Methodist Church and its vibrant Pioneer Sunday School Class. She also valued her sisterhood in the PEO philanthropic organization. All will remember her bright face, her thoughtfulness, her strong faith, and her abiding love for her family. Her interests included gardening, cheering for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren at school events, and attending foreign policy lectures. Janie cherished visiting every local frozen yogurt store with her special friend Walter “Wally” Simpson. A special thanks to Hospice of Central Pa for their compassionate care of Janie and guidance of family through her death. Memorial contributions may be made to the Janie Altland Memorial Fund for Urachal Cancer Research 3375 Cote Saint-Catherine Road Montreal, QC H3T 1E2 or to the Hospice of Central PA (HCP) Development Department 1320 Linglestown Road Harrisburg, Pa 17110. A memorial service will be held in the Camp Hill United Methodist Church, 417 South 22nd Street, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 15. Musselman’s Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.
