September 12, 1924 - December 29, 2017
Charles (Charlie) Franklin Frey, Jr. died peacefully at Masonic Village in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania on December 28, 2017. He was born September 12, 1924 in Hazleton to the late Charles Franklin Frey, Sr. and Mabel Dohner Frey. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Doris Correll Frey, and his sister Emma (Robert) Mason. He is survived by son David (Charlotte) Frey of Hilliard, Ohio, nephew Robert Mason of Arizona and niece Carolynn Mason of Pennsylvania. A special thanks to long-time friends Jill and John Tamosaitis and their children Alexa and Eli for all their loving care, calls, visits, cards and thoughtfulness over the years. Charles served in Patton's 3rd Army and was at Buchenwald concentration camp when it was liberated in 1945, then on the Queen Mary on his way to Japan when the bomb was dropped in Hiroshima. Charles attended Penn State University. He was employed at Bell of Pennsylvania where he retired after 38 years of service and was a member of the LH Kinnard Chapter #7 of Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Camp Hill and the Masonic Hazle Azalea Fellowship Lodge No. 327 of Hazleton and served on the Pennsylvania Republican Party State Central Committee. As Camp Hill grew and traffic and accidents increased, he successfully petitioned the State to install a traffic light at 21st Street Bypass which allowed for safe travel through the intersection by residents and emergency vehicles. He and Doris enjoyed traveling in retirement. They experienced the beauty of Hawaii and the Alps in Austria, Germany and Switzerland and sites in Ireland, England and Scotland. His ventures included a ride down the Olympic bobsled run in Innsbruck, white water rafting down the Snake River Canyon, lying on his back to kiss the Blarney Stone and marching in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Ireland, all when he was in his 70s. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Camp Hill at 11 a.m. on January 13, 2018 with Bishop Buy S. Edminston, Jr., D.D. presiding. Friends may call at 10 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.
