Mark B. Underwood

Mark Broughton Underwood, 78, of Harrisburg, PA, passed away on September 20, 2023. Born on July 8, 1945, Mark was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Mark was a man of many interests and passions. As a young man, he enjoyed golf. He found joy in spending time flower gardening, reading, playing cards, engaging in lively political discussions, and observing bird and wildlife in nature. He cherished his walks at Wildwood Park, finding solace and tranquility in its serene surroundings. Mark enjoyed helping others, particularly college students at Messiah College, where he volunteered in the Elder Service Partner Program. He took great pleasure in supporting his favorite sports teams, including the Harrisburg Senators and was a lifelong fan of Penn State football and the Philadelphia Phillies. Mark's dedication to education was evident throughout his life. He attended Lock Haven High School and went on to earn a Bachelor's degree from Lock Haven State College. He furthered his education at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Mark's passion for teaching led him to work as an English Teacher at Greenwood and Addison Central Schools, where he also served as the coach of the Cross Country Team. He later ventured into various career paths, including roles at Underwood Greetings, NFIB, and World Book Encyclopedia Sales, and in tele-marketing. In his later years, Mark found fulfillment in custodial work. Mark will be remembered and deeply missed by his daughters, Ruth Cannava and Rebecca Van Brunt, as well as his grandchildren, Heather and Skyler Van Brunt, Laura Cannava, and Courtney and Tim Cannava. He is also survived by his former wife, Marilyn Hopper, his brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and June Underwood, and his sister and her wife, Elizabeth Steffy and Sandra Rishell. He is preceded in death by his long- time girlfriend, Grace Watts. In accordance with Mark's wishes, his body has been donated to Hershey Medical School. As a result, funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time. Mark Broughton Underwood's life was marked by his genuine care for others, his love for learning, and his passion for nature and sports. He will be remembered as a kind-hearted one-of-a-kind individual who made a positive impact on the lives of those around him. May his memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew him.
